The meeting was called to order promptly at sunrise.

Present were:

• Harold the Horseradish

• Clara Carrot

• Penelope Pea

• The Onion Brothers

• Three Lettuces

• Susan Squash

• A somewhat distracted zucchini

Madame Steward looked around the circle.

"Excellent. Is everyone here?"

Harold consulted the attendance leaf.

"...Mostly."

Just then...

A voice echoed from the gate.

"WE'RE HERE!"

Every head turned.

Marching proudly through the entrance was Marvin.

Behind him...

...came a pineapple.

A banana.

Three coconuts.

An avocado wearing sunglasses.

Two oranges.

A kiwi.And what everyone agreed was an extremely confident mango.

Silence.

Harold slowly removed his glasses.

"...Marvin."

"Yes?"

"...this is the Garden Council."

"I know!"

"...they don't grow here."

"They're vegetables at heart."

The pineapple cleared his throat.

"I am fairly certain I'm a fruit."

Marvin waved dismissively.

"Labels only divide us."

Madame Steward pinched the bridge of her nose.

"Marvin..."

"Yes?"

"Where did you find these people?"

"The produce section."

"..."

"They seemed lonely."

The mango raised a hand.

"May I speak?"

Harold sighed.

"I don't see why not.""I'd like to thank everyone for welcoming us."

"We didn't."

"It's the thought that counts."

The avocado adjusted his sunglasses.

"I brought guacamole."

The onions immediately forgave him.

After nearly an hour...

...the council had accidentally solved four garden problems...

...learned two tropical recipes...

...and agreed that coconuts tell surprisingly entertaining stories.

As everyone prepared to leave, Harold leaned toward Morsel Wrangler.

"I suppose it wasn't a total disaster."

She smiled.

"No."

"It wasn't."

Across the yard Marvin beamed proudly.

"I told you diversity was delicious!"

Nobody knew what that meant.

But somehow...

...everyone agreed.

Future meetings shall remain open to all fruits, vegetables, herbs, and exceptionally well-

behaved fungi...

...provided Marvin provides a guest list prior to the meeting.

Marvin voted against the motion.
